I just saw an incredible new film by Wim Wenders, “Ansel Kiefer”, in 3D. What a fiest of a cinema! What an artistry! In Toronto’s theatres in Dec 22. I wanted to share this image I made a while back. It has a similar feeling of voyerism, surrealism and action as the film. In my humble opinion. Win Wenders is a master who captured the work of another master.

Last year I shot a microshort “Paradox” on @pixomondo Volume Wall. It’s a sci-fi comedy about a picture-perfect Medieval marriage proposal that gets interrupted by a feminist time traveller. This year it’s been screening in Spain, Portugal, States and Canada, and soon will be heading to South Africa for a film festival. 

It is always such a delight to see your work finding its audience. And it warms my heart when these audiences are all over the world. Each fiction film is such a team effort, and this, one of the shortest films I’ve ever made had the biggest crew I ever worked with - over a hundred people!

A few month ago I posted a photograph I shot in a Vietnamese cave, “Bursting with light”. But it always felt unfinished. I knew I had to poke holes through it to let more light in. What I didn’t expect was a beautiful sun flare that it will also give me in the process, which now completes the image so nicely.

The old name doesn’t seem to fit anymore, so I am renaming it to “Stardust”. As we are all made of it and will return to it one day.

By swiping left you’ll see the process of letting the light do its magic and the first version of the image before it became what it was always meant to be.

Thank you to @svenjas_timeout for assisting me on this self-portrait shoot back in April. This cave is accessible by kayaks only, not too far from Ha Long Bay, Northern Vietnam.

Clark Johnson. American-Canadian actor, director, most notably known for the series “The Wire” and “Homicide: Life on the street”. Who also happens to be the producer of a number of my films and my ex. 

There is no way for me to describe his mark on my life in a few words. We spent nearly 10 years together nearly 9 years ago despite our whooping age difference. That’s a testament of its own.

Clark came to my studio back in the summer when I just opened it and I photographed him. I can’t believe he also let me photograph him for my personal photoseries. In fact, we were both a bit in shock after the shoot. But it was deeply therapeutic for me. 

He remains one of the kindest people I’ve met in my life who continues to root for my success. For this, I am forever grateful.

We are all connected, to the stars and each other. As I prep for a music video shoot that happens tomorrow, I remember how much I love working with the light while in darkness. How I thrive on the feeling of awe and the beautiful complexity of our world.

I took this image of a writer @oldmanlumans while in the Wyoming artist residency a few years back. This was one of the darkest and most impressive skies I’ve seen.

My friend @masha_bosis bravely decided to work with me on an art photo therapy project. We spoke at length about the hurdles she was facing and how much harm they cause her emotionally. We spoke about the feelings she was going through and what she hoped to achieve. And then shot. And shot and shot. 

These images emerged as we went deeper into discussions. I love what they represent: a light that brings clarity and lifts off the weight of the shoulders. 

We still have another part of the therapeutic photography to go through, and I am excited not only to see the final results, but to hear from her about her own experience of the process. I applaud her resilience.

Photography has been my own therapy for many years and I am happy to help others find their own peace and joy through this process. Did I mention I have an MA in Psychology from back home? Let’s talk if you’d like to know more.

That’s a wrap on an experimental art film we started shooting in November. Divided into four chapters, “Sound Mind” is a performance created by Governor General Awardee Gordon Monahan and prolific dancer Bill Coleman. They tour the show around the world, and I was hired to shoot a short film version of it, and boy, was it fun!

Bill wears a helmet which reads his brainwaves which Gordon transforms into sounds via special program. These sounds transmit into different environments and objects, ie into the forest, onto a drum and - here - @yamahacanmusic piano that can play itself. Bill dances to these sounds, which become the sounds of his own brainwaves.

My right hand camera man on the journey was talented @efremovalexander . Zoe and David stepped in for two chapters of the film, including yours truly also operating. Thank you @vero_mount for helping us out on the last chapter.

I love working on projects that push the boundaries and explore creativity. We aim for the “Sound mind” film to be completed in early 2024.

People in North America seem to take pride in operating at the near burnt out capacity. I feel like I was going non-stop for about 6 weeks, but it’s more like 3 months really. And today is finally my full day off. Just today, but at least. 

Even though I’m happy and proud of all that was accomplished, the insanity and intensity of all the events should not be normalized. I love operating at a whirlwind of events, but today I am holding to my couch like @kabuki.grrrl here, to a tree, at the Mexican Cenote Escondido.

This was Yael’s first ever underwater modelling gig and she made me so proud for all her work.

Being underwater calms me down, grounds me and gives me a feeling of a free flight. I love it so much. And miss it.

Fearless, incredible, strong and magical filmmaker Anastasia Trofimova @tro.film whom I am privileged to call a friend. She is a rare guest on Canadian soil, so I grab her when I can. I wanted to capture her amazing long hair and the eyes that have seen a lot. 

To me, this witchy-like portrait shows complexity of a female soul and the powers that lay within it. 

And a touch of behind the scenes - what we did to keep her hair like this. I also used a smoke machine to diffuse the light and a total of three flashes.

“Moonwatchers” exhibition at Melt Gallery in Picton is currently on, featuring three works of mine from the Mexican jungle. I was inspired by the density of the forest and its magic as it transformed into a colourful wall under my flashlight at night. The exhibition runs till September 17th.

Happy International Photography day! Here’s a few of my favourites throughout the years. I’ve been in love with this medium since I was a teenager and am so lucky that I get to practice it ever since. Photography is the reason I became a lighting technician in film back in 2004 - I wanted to learn as much as I could about lighting. This learning never stops. I’m a forever student of light. 

My first photo exhibition was in 2008, at the Filmport studios, organized by Iatse 873, where I sold 8 out of 10 of my works. By now, there are over 30 exhibitions in Canada, Belgium, Peru and the USA, and this month my works hang at three different venues in two cities, including @abbozzogallery and @meltstudiogallery (opening is today!). 

Photography taught me to appreciate light, to express my feelings during the hard times and just makes me happy when I’m at it. It became my visual language that I love speaking. I love teaching it, showing it and feeling it. Forever grateful for an opportunity to have my own studio to keep on experimenting, creating and sharing. Happy Photo day, colleagues!

So much has been going on in my life this summer! Sometimes I feel like hiding, sometimes I want to push myself as far as I can to see what happens. I’ve been certainly getting out of my comfort zone with running of the studio. I’ve also noticed how comfortably I am getting in doing it. There are no more boring days and tons of things to do. And so many things to look forward to!

This underwater shoot was my first (and only) shoot with the proper uw weights and a rebreather (so that I can stay underwater indefinitely capturing the beauty). I am grateful for such moments.

And miss shooting underwater. 
With my August filling up quite quickly (a directing job, 2 exhibitions, a workshop to run etc), I may only have one weekend in the end to do that. I still have my uw camera case and a flash. Who’d like to be photographed underwater? I am cool with both the pool and open water.

Beautiful Daphne, mother of @cookiedefreitas came into my studio. I love her face, filled with stories and experiences, her contagious laughter and generous sincere smile. Elders are the knowledge keepers who are sometimes ignored because we live fast lives and tend to disregard them. Ageism is real, but I feel like Daphne is beyond that. She is a bright sparkle who lightened up my studio with her presence.
This portrait was made through the glass that is covered with the charcoal and dust on the photographer’s side.

My short comedy “The Robbery” was released during pandemic. It played at such festivals as Just For Laughs, St. Louis International, LA Comedy fest, St. John’s Women’s and won an audience choice award at the Cinefest Sudbury. This Saturday it will play in Toronto at the Super Wonder Gallery (what a great title!) at 8 pm. And I’ll finally get to see it with an audience. I am so thrilled and hope to see you there. What a joy it is when dreams become realities, when tough tasks get done and things seem to fall into places. Do you let yourself enjoy this ride? Or do you focus on the negatives? I encourage you to take a deep breath, right now. To close your eyes and think of three things you can be grateful for right now. Even though life may seem hard. Acknowledge these three things, thank them for being present and continue with your day. Take another long breath. Doesn’t it feel better already? I try to practice this when negativity wants to crawl into my life. Don’t let it consume you!

I love experimenting with the hybrid photography and am happy to do such portraits for your loved ones. The variety of techniques vary. Here I used simple flower petals on the printed image. Other techniques involve water, ice, fire, feathers and anything and everything else. This one is “Lightness”.

“I mean, I think I have a good heart” - as an involuntary childless woman who still has a little bit of hope left to be a mother one day, all kinds of thoughts run through my head: Maybe I am not meant to be a mother. Maybe I’m better off as is. Maybe I won’t be a good mother. Maybe I will be. I think I will be. I love children. I have so much love to give. Maybe the universe is telling me to move on and focus on other things. But, I mean, I think I have a good heart and am worthy of the experience… It could be quite hectic in my head sometimes as I am nearing the age where it feels almost too late to become one.

And so I turn to photography to channel my feelings. Because sometimes it’s just too hard to keep them all inside and they need to spill out. 

It is very scary to open up about such a private matter. But you gave me so much support through my stories where I posted a bit of my fertility process. Thank you! I’ve been on this quest for many years. And you are making me stronger. I am so lucky to have you.

Knowing the power of the art, I open my doors (and of my studio) and invite you to experience an artistic transfer of the feelings into the work of art. It feels like a wave of a relief. A catharsis. Sometimes it comes during the process of photographing. Sometimes it comes when you see the final result. It is deeply satisfying. And the final work becomes a testament of your resilience.

Have you ever had a feeling that got stuck with you and was hard to get over with? Perhaps it was an anxiety or sadness, insecurity or grief… I invite you to look at it from a new perspective. Photography has been a form of a therapy for me for many years. And now I open the doors for you to experience the power of it, where you become a hero of your own story of resilience and strength. 

Together we will craft a photograph where you get to interact with the physical depiction of your feeling. You get to choose what happens in this new narrative. This transfer approach has been widely used in psychology and is known to bring new and healing results. 

Externalization of a problem allows you to see yourself in it and to step away for a more objective view. It may even offer a wonderful catharsis. 

The depiction of your interaction with the feeling would be captured in my signature magical realism style, and the final image becomes a testament of your strength.

I’ve shot this in Vietnam, and I call it “A Dilemma”. It represents the turmoil of making a hard decision. But it also offers lightness and support, a moment before you settle in once and for all for the choice you’re about to make. After weighting on all the possible outcomes. The clarity is coming. 

I want to help you feel this clarity and lightness after going through the art photo therapy with me. It works!
